Pattern Do-san

Do-san is the pseudonym of the patriot An Chang-Ho (1876-1938). The 24 movements represent his entire life, which he devoted to furthering the education of Korea and its independence movement.

Movements: 24

Ready stance: Parallel ready

  1. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward B into a left walking stance while executing a high, side, block with the outer forearm.
  2. Maintain the left walking stance toward B and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.

Perform move 3 in a spot-turning motion – method one

  1. Move the ball of the left foot half way to the right foot and then pivot on the left foot and turn clockwise; move the right foot toward A into a right walking stance while executing a high, side, block with the outer forearm.
  2. Maintain a right walking stance toward A and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.
  3. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward D into a right L-stance while executing a guarding block with a knife-hand.
  4. Move the right foot toward D into a right walking stance while executing a thrust with the right, straight fingertip.
  5. Pivot on the balls of both feet until they face BD, while twisting the right knife-hand together with the body counterclockwise, in a releasing motion, until the right palm faces down. Then pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward D into a left walking stance while executing a high, side, strike with the backfist.
  6. Move the right foot toward D into a right walking stance while executing a high, side, strike with the backfist.
  7. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward E into a left walking stance while executing a high, side, and block with the outer forearm.
  8. Maintain a left walking stance toward E and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.

Perform move 11 in a spot-turning motion – method one

  1. Move the ball of the left foot half way to the right foot and then pivot on the left foot and turn clockwise; move the right foot toward F into a right walking stance while executing a high, side, block with the outer forearm.
  2. Maintain the right walking stance toward F and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.
  3. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward CE into a left walking stance while executing a high, wedging block with the outer forearm.
  4. Execute a front snap kick to CE with the right foot, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 13.

Perform moves 15 and 16 in a fast motion

  1. Lower the right foot toward CE into a right walking stance while executing a punch with the forefist.
  2. Maintain a right walking stance toward CE and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.
  3. Pivot on the left foot and turn clockwise; move the right foot toward CF into a right walking stance while executing a high, wedging block with the outer forearm.
  4. Execute a front snap kick to CF with the left foot, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 17.

Perform moves 19 and 20 in a fast motion

  1. Lower the left foot toward CF into a left walking stance while executing a punch with the forefist.
  2. Maintain a left walking stance toward CF and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist. 
  3. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward C into a left walking while executing a rising block with the outer forearm.
  4. Move the right foot toward C into a right walking stance while executing a rising block with the outer forearm.
  5. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward B into a sitting stance toward D, while executing a side, strike with the left knife-hand toward B.

While exewcuting move 24 shout “Do-san” as a ki-hap and remain in this position until given the next command.

  1. Move the left foot to the right foot, and then move the right foot toward A into a sitting stance toward D, while executing a side, strike with the right knife-hand toward A.
